Cape Breton University and Dalhousie have partnered to establish the Cape Breton Medical Campus (CBMC) in Sydney, Nova Scotia, with the goal of enhancing healthcare delivery in rural communities. CBMC aims to train a new generation of physicians skilled in family medicine, rural practice, and Indigenous health, contributing to Nova Scotia's evolving health reform agenda.

We are seeking applications for a Director of Student & Resident Affairs to provide leadership and support to students and residents at CBMC. The Director of Student and Resident Affairs is a full-time continuing leadership position in the Faculty of Medicine, responsible to the Assistant Dean, Student & Resident Affairs, CBMC and to the Director of Operations, CBMC, and as such, works collaboratively with many necessary colleagues and partners within the Faculty and beyond to the broader university and medical communities.

The Director is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and performance of the Student & Resident Affairs office, providing strategic and operational direction for policies, procedures, systems, and learner support initiatives. The role oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of Undergraduate Student Affairs programming and wellness initiatives across campuses, as well as resident wellness programming. The Director provides guidance and support to learners, assesses needs, facilitates access to appropriate resources, and ensures alignment between Student Affairs and Resident Affairs to provide a continuum of support throughout academic and professional training. The position requires strong leadership, program management, communication, problem-solving, and independent decision-making skills while maintaining knowledge of relevant university policies, the MarDoc collective agreement, CaRMS, and medical education accreditation standards.

The Director fosters collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, CBMC, Health Authorities, and key partners to develop and enhance learner support services. The role is responsible for recruiting, mentoring, and supervising the Student & Resident Affairs team, including the Advisor and Coordinator positions, and works closely with faculty site leads at the four Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship/Residency teaching sites. The Director may act on behalf of the Assistant Dean when required and ensures effective operations, continuity of services, and appropriate office coverage.

The Director will ensure backup / coverage for all positions as required.

To be considered, candidates must hold:

·         Master’s degree in adult education, psychology, counselling, or other related discipline is required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;

·         Significant (5 to 7 years) progressive experience in a related field, including learner affairs, program design and/or counselling, preferably in a university or health care setting is required;

·         Demonstrated experience in people leadership and budgetary management is required (minimum 5 years.);

·         The incumbent will have a proven track record of interpersonal, organizational and communication skills;

·         Knowledge of medical education programs and/or academic health care environment is required;

·         Project management training and experience are preferred;

·         Have knowledge of and experience working with on-line learning and video communications platforms (i.e., One-45, Sharepoint, BrightSpace, Microsoft Teams, etc.).
