Position Overview

The Environmental Technician will work collaboratively with ACAP Cape Breton staff to support the implementation of lot-level flood mitigation assessments and community outreach activities. The successful candidates will interact directly with homeowners and residents, conduct basic property assessments, collect and organize field data, and help communicate practical flood mitigation recommendations to the public.

Training will be provided for assessment methodologies and flood mitigation best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support outreach and engagement activities with homeowners and community members participating in the Lot-Level Flood Mitigation Program

  • Conduct residential lot-level flood mitigation assessments under staff guidance and established protocols

  • Collect, record, organize, and maintain accurate field and assessment data

  • Assist with identifying residential flood risks and potential mitigation opportunities

  • Communicate flood mitigation concepts and recommendations clearly and professionally to residents

  • Assist with scheduling site visits and coordinating assessment activities

  • Support preparation of assessment summaries, reports, and outreach materials;

  • Participate in public engagement events, workshops, or information sessions as required

  • Work collaboratively with project staff and contribute to a positive team environment

  • Follow organizational health, safety, and professional conduct expectations during fieldwork and public interactions

Required Qualifications

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Friendly, professional, and respectful approach when interacting with members of the public

  • Good organizational and time management skills

  • Reliability and ability to work independently and collaboratively with coworkers

  • Strong observational and technical assessment skills

  • Willingness and ability to learn through provided training

  • Comfortable conducting fieldwork and visiting residential properties

  • Ability to accurately collect and manage data and field notes

  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation is considered an asset

  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations

Qualifications Which Are Assets, But Not Required to Apply

  • Background in environmental science, environmental technology, or related fields

  • Experience in fieldwork, inspections, property assessments, or community outreach

  • Familiarity with climate adaptation, stormwater management, or residential flood mitigation 

  • Experience working directly with the public or in customer service settings
