Employment - Accessible Sport Program Coordinators

Accessible Sport Program Coordinators

Sport and Social Club of Cape Breton

Part-Time Contract

Weekdays Weekends Evenings

Description

SSCC has partnered with Cape Breton University and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to address a gap in accessible, recreational, and ability-responsive sports programming across CBRM. SSCC intends to develop a new program that introduces different types of accessible, low impact sports and recreational activities to older adults and people who need accommodation to join or return to sports. The program will initially run as a multisport series (with activities such as walking soccer, badminton, catch and throw volleyball, walking ultimate frisbee, pickleball, seated volleyball, etc.) and may develop into a set sport rotation based on participant interest. Goals of the project include developing active-for-life programming, creating a fun-first non-competitive sporting environment, and increasing opportunities for social engagement. The program will mostly run out of the New Waterford Community Wellness Centre and will be run by one to two Accessible Sport Program Coordinators, as well as by volunteers.

The Accessible Sport Program Coordinators are responsible for planning, organizing, and running the Sport and Social Club’s new accessible sport program. Coordinators will handle program delivery, program evaluation, marketing, and client communications. A good fit for this role will be self-motivated, comfortable managing multiple priorities and working with a team, and capable of instructing and leading programs. As a frontline representative for SSCC, they play an essential role in fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging atmosphere at all SSCC events. Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing a regular program of accessible sports (weekly activities during the day and/or evening).

  • Moderating and running sports/events to ensure that all participants feel welcomed, included, and comfortable in SSCC spaces. Duties may include greeting participants, setting up equipment, updating participant waivers, taking payments, time keeping, explaining rules, and ensuring that events have all the required equipment, first aid kits, and waivers.

  • Recruiting, training, and coordinating volunteers.

  • Establishing a mentorship program to help seniors feel comfortable taking part in the accessible sport program, including the recruitment and coordination of volunteer mentors.

  • Maintaining accurate records of program attendance, expenses, and other relevant information, and preparing reports on program outcomes and impact.

  • Evaluating program impacts and success rates.

  • Developing new recreation options based on the interests of participants, SSCC’s mandate, and project objectives.

  • Researching current trends and best practices in sport and recreation programming.

  • Collaborating with directors and marketing staff on promotion to ensure new programs reach underrepresented and underserved populations.

  • Purchasing program supplies and managing the project budget.

  • Outreach and promotion activities, such as providing information about the accessible sport program at local markets or events.

  • Some evenings and weekends required. Some travel required in order to offer programming in different communities.
