Compensation Package: $65,000 - $78,000 annual salary, 3
weeks’ paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, flexible work

partner with the Cape Breton Food Hub to find an Executive Director to lead
their growing team.
The Cape Breton Food Hub Co-operative is a community-driven
organization that connects local food producers with consumers, restaurants,
and institutions through an online marketplace, retail operations, and
community programming. Our mission is to strengthen the local food system,
support producers, and improve access to fresh, local food across Cape Breton.
The Food Hub operates a multi-faceted model including
e-commerce, aggregation and distribution, retail, a commercial kitchen, and is
entering a key phase of organizational sustainability and growth.
Position Summary:
The Executive Director (ED) is a hands-on leadership role
spanning strategic, operational, and administrative responsibilities, with the
opportunity to help shape future team structure and support models. Reporting
to the Board of Directors, the ED is responsible for ensuring the organization
delivers on its mission while maintaining financial sustainability, strong
governance, and meaningful community impact. The ED must be comfortable
operating within a complex, evolving organization where systems, processes, and
structures are still being refined, bringing clarity, structure, and
prioritization in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a community-based organization at a pivotal moment. The organization is currently undergoing an organizational review and sustainability planning process, the successful candidate will play a central role in strengthening the Food Hub’s sustainability, supporting local producers, and shaping the future of the local food system in Cape Breton.
Core Accountabilities:
- Provide overall leadership and execute the organization’s strategic direction in alignment with the Board of Directors.
- Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring effective delivery of programs, services, and marketplace activities.
- Serve as the primary liaison to the Board, ensuring strong governance, reporting, and organizational alignment.
- Lead financial management and sustainability, including budgeting, cash flow, reporting, and revenue generation (grants, partnerships, fundraising).
- Oversee and grow diversified revenue streams (e-commerce, retail, value-added production), identifying opportunities for expansion and long-term sustainability.
- Lead workforce planning, including staffing, recruitment, and team development.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with members, partners, funders, and the broader community.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including food safety and quality standards.
- Lead grant writing, reporting, and funder engagement.
- Oversee communications and marketing, including member engagement and public-facing materials.
- Coordinate and attend Board, Committee, and Annual General Meetings.
- Other duties as required to support the organization's mission and evolving practices.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Management, or a related field, and/or equivalent experience is required.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ senior leadership experience is required; experience leading in a non-profit, co-operative, or social enterprise environment is preferred.
- Strong financial management experience, including budgeting, forecasting, and performance monitoring is required.
- Experience leading organizations through periods of change, growth, or restructuring is considered a strong asset.
- Experience navigating complex stakeholder environments with overlapping roles and interests (e.g., members, staff, producers, and partners) is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of the local food system, agriculture sector, or community economic development is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, grant writing, and revenue development.
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors.
- Strong understanding of KPIs and performance-driven management metrics.
- Demonstrated ability to make clear, timely decisions and establish effective decision-making structures within a collaborative environment.
- Experience managing teams and fostering a positive, accountable workplace culture.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong time management and ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Clear criminal record and vulnerable sector checks are required.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
