The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Cape Breton University (CBU) is accepting applications for a Research Manager to join a transformative, multi-year research initiative titled Homeward Bound: Enhancing Healthcare, Housing, and Social Support for Aging Rural Nova Scotians. Funded by Research Nova Scotia and led by Dr. Alison Grittner and Dr. Kate Linden, this 7-year initiative aims to support aging in the right place (AIRP) by improving the integration of healthcare, housing, and social services in rural communities across Nova Scotia’s Eastern Health Zone.

About the Role:

This position will focus on the research management and operational support of the Homeward Bound project, working closely with the Project Manager, Research Coordinator, and Research Leads.

The successful candidate will be a key member of the project’s leadership team, contributing to the implementation of research grounded in community-based participatory approaches and informed by critical feminist theory. The role involves leadership across all stages of community-engaged research, including participant engagement, data collection and analysis, and knowledge mobilization. Research activities include asset-mapping workshops, RCTs, arts-based interviews (e.g., digital storytelling and photovoice), and co-design workshops, which the candidate will oversee and operationalize.

This is a full-time, hybrid position reporting to the Principal Investigators and working within a multidisciplinary team. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal subject to funding and project needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Data Governance and Ethic

  • Oversee secure management of quantitative and qualitative data in consultation with the Principal Investigators and Co-Investigators;
  • Ensure compliance with REB requirements and project-specific data management protocols;
  • Maintain systems for de-identification, consent tracking, and secure storage;
  • Support the preparation and submission of research ethics applications.

Qualitative & Quantitative Data Management and Analysis

  • Oversee transcription workflows and qualitative data organization in NVivo;
  • Maintain a master data log, including interview metadata and consent status;
  • Support the development and maintenance of a shared qualitative codebook;
  • Supervise coding and analysis activities conducted by research leads, research assistants, and contractors.

Analysis, Reporting, and Knowledge Mobilization

  • Ensure high-quality quantitative and qualitative data analysis aligned with project objectives
  • Prepare written summaries and reports suitable for presentations, technical reports, and manuscripts
  • Support accurate and timely reporting to meet project deliverables

Team Leadership and Values

  • Supervise and support research staff, trainees, and contractors working in community-based settings
  • Uphold critical feminist values, anti-oppressive practice, and an ethic of care across all project activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline;
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in an interdisciplinary research setting;
  • Demonstrated experience in research management and team supervision;
  • Strong experience with qualitative or quantitative research methods and interdisciplinary research;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, NVivo, and reference management software (e.g., Zotero);
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing priorities;
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-oppressive, community-engaged research practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant discipline;
  • Experience with Tableau or other data visualization tools;
  • Experience supervising interdisciplinary and community-based research teams.
